In the past, bathrooms were purely functional rooms – and many houses were built without large or fancy bathrooms. Today, bathrooms can be luxurious, stylish, and spa-like. They also may offer a lot more storage and functionality than an older bathroom.

A bathroom renovation is a great way to add value to your house. Whether you want to do a down-to-the-studs renovation, add to your house, or simply update your existing bathroom, our builders can make it happen. We work hand-in-hand with our clients to design bathrooms that meet their needs and complete every construction project with meticulous attention to detail.

The team at Carl Deputy and Son Builders renovates homes in Kent and Sussex counties in Delaware, including bathroom renovations and remodels. We know that a well-designed bathroom can add joy to your life and be a good investment in your home. If you are contemplating a new or upgraded bathroom for your house, reach out to learn more about our services.

    Our Bathroom Renovation Services

At Carl Deputy & Son Builders, we offer all types of bathroom renovation and remodeling services based on our clients’ needs. We offer a range of options for our clients, such as:

    • Primary Bathroom Renovations: having a primary bathroom is no longer a luxury – it is standard on most new homes. A great primary bath also adds value to your home. Whether you want to update your current bathroom, change the layout of the bathroom, or add a new bathroom to your house, we can make your dreams come true.
    • Complete Bathroom Renovations: upgrading your bathroom is often a great investment. A bathroom that is both beautiful and functional will not only make your day-to-day life better but will also make your home more appealing to potential buyers should you decide to sell. If you want to expand your existing bathroom, make it into a spa-like retreat, or add more modern features, we can make it happen with a down-to-the-studs renovation. We can also address issues such as mold and mildew that may be a problem in your existing bathroom.
    • Bathroom Remodels: if you own an older home, then your bathroom might have outdated tile or fixtures or simply not be the style that you want. We offer a range of options for homeowners who want to spruce up their bathroom without taking down walls, adding to their home, or rearranging the plumbing.
    • Powder Room Remodels: a half bathroom or powder room is typically the bathroom that is used most often by guests – so it makes sense to upgrade it. While these rooms are small, that isn’t a reason to skimp on style or quality craftsmanship. We can renovate your half bath to beautify it and help it fit with the rest of your home.
    • Accessibility Renovations: if someone in your family has a disability or you want to plan for your later years, then renovating your bathroom to be accessible may be necessary. Using the principles of universal design, we will work with you to come up with a plan that ensures that your bathroom is usable by everyone. Features like lower countertops, zero entry (roll-in) showers, and wider door frames can all be utilized to accommodate disabilities.
    • Adding Storage or Changing the Bathroom Layout: in older houses, bathrooms are often not laid out in a way that makes sense for the 21st century. In a bathroom renovation, we can move plumbing, increase storage, or even change the size of the bathroom itself.
    • Including Luxe Features: bathrooms are no longer just a utilitarian room. Many homeowners want to feel like they are going to the spa from the comfort of their own home. Some of the more popular bathroom design trends include steam showers, saunas, shower rooms, freestanding tubs, and more unique tile. Whatever your design dreams may be, we can work with you to make it a reality.

Whether your house has one bathroom or five, a bathroom renovation can be a great investment. This is a room that gets a lot of use – so why not make it beautiful and functional?

    Our Process

    The Bathroom Renovation Process

A bathroom renovation often takes under a month to complete once construction has begun. Of course, there are often far more steps involved in the process – including the all-important planning stage. Below, we outline our typical bathroom renovation timeline.

    1. Planning

Whether you are interested in a full renovation, an addition, or a facelift for your bathroom, the first step is always planning. Our team will meet with you to plan your remodel. Ideally, we will go to your house first to take a look at your current bathroom and get a better idea of the scale of the project and any limitations that you might have. For example, it isn’t always possible – or it might be really expensive – to move plumbing around or to expand a space. We need to have a rough idea of the layout of your bathroom so that we can better plan the renovation.

In this meeting, we will have a conversation with you about what your goals are for your bathroom renovation. We will also talk about your budget, the length of time that your proposed renovation will take, and other details of the project. The planning stage is particularly important so that you have an idea of what we can do, how much it will cost, and how long you can expect it to take.

    2. Budgeting

After the planning meeting, we will draft a proposed contract for the renovation. This proposal will include an estimate of how much the project will cost, including materials and labor.

There are many factors that influence the total price of your renovation. Moving walls or adding onto your house will typically cost far more than simply changing out the tile, vanity, and fixtures. Similarly, choosing certain materials – like marble countertops – or a more complicated design will generally add to the overall cost.

    3. Contract Signing and Financing

If you choose to hire us, we will sign a contract for the project. Having a signed contract is necessary to obtain financing if you plan to take out a loan for your bathroom renovation. If you don’t have a lender in mind, we can recommend one for you.

    4. Customizing Your Bathroom

Before we can begin demolition, we will need to go over your choices for the materials that we use. We should already have laid out the design itself, including the placement of sinks and tubs and closet space. At this point, we will need to pick finishes, such as the tile that you’d like to use for the walls and floors, whether you’d like a built-in shower nook or bench, and light fixtures and exhaust fans. During this stage, you will get a better idea of what the finished bathroom will look like and make any changes before we start tearing out your existing bathroom.

    5. Construction

Construction is messy work. Our goal is to always minimize the dust and dirt whenever possible, doing our best to contain it in the room where we are working. Before demolition begins, we will put up dust barriers, lay down floor protectors, and take other steps to confine the mess to the bathroom.

Next, we will begin to tear out your old bathroom per your instructions. Once demolition is complete, we will begin rough work – placing out and building the walls, plumbing, and electrical. For example, if you are adding a closet with a washer and dryer to your primary bathroom, we will frame out the closet and add the appropriate plumbing and electrical outlets.

Once the rough work is done, we will ask you to do a walk-through of the bathroom to make sure that everything is as you want it to be. If you don’t like something about the layout, make sure to tell us – it is far less expensive to make a change at this stage than after the walls have been tiled or the floors have been laid.

If you are happy with the layout, we will begin the actual construction work.  We will install tubs, lay tile, and install lights and exhaust fans. Our construction work is carefully planned in phases to minimize the risk of damage to your new bathroom.

Throughout the construction phase, we will meet with you and show you through the space to make sure that you are satisfied and answer questions. We will also keep you in the loop about any potential delays or changes to the budget.

    6. Final Walkthrough

After we complete construction on your new bathroom, we will walk through it with you to make sure that it has been finished to your standards. If there are any outstanding punch list items, like installing drawer knobs or touching up paint, we will complete them. We will then do an orientation with you to show you all of the bathroom’s features and how things work.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bathroom Renovations

As custom home builders and renovation experts, our clients often have a lot of questions for us. Below, we answer some of the more commonly asked questions for you.

    1. How Much Will My Bathroom Renovation Cost?

The cost of any renovation – including a bathroom remodel – will depend on the size and complexity of the project. It is also heavily dependent on the materials that you choose. For example, if you pick an expensive imported tile that requires a more complicated installation, then you will likely pay more for both the tile and the installation.

If you are doing any major construction work as part of the renovation – like moving walls or adding onto your house – it will cost more than a purely cosmetic remodel. During the planning and budgeting phase, our team will talk you through projected costs and different options based on your budget.

    2. Do Bathroom Remodels Add Value to Your Home?

If you watch HGTV, you have probably seen house hunters talking about gorgeous kitchens and bathrooms. These rooms are often considered priorities when it comes to making your home more appealing to buyers. For this reason, bathroom renovations usually have a good return on investment (ROI).

Of course, if you choose a lot of expensive finishes and features, you may not get the same ROI.  Renovating your bathroom so it looks great and is functional – without including costly extras like a sauna – often gives you the best bang for your buck.

For most people, a bathroom renovation isn’t just about being able to list their house for more – they just want a nice bathroom. Unless you are renovating specifically to put your house on the market, then you should make choices that you like and that work for you and your family.

    3. Can a Bathroom Renovation Address Mold and Mildew Issues?

Yes. Mold and mildew are common concerns in places with high humidity, such as bathrooms. A lack of proper ventilation, leaking pipes, and improper installation of materials like shower floors can all lead to mold problems.

A bathroom renovation can remove any existing mold – including mold that may have grown on the studs of the walls – and help to reduce the risk of mold recurring. At Carl Deputy and Son Builders, we are well-versed in practices like waterproofing bathrooms, replacing old plumbing, installing efficient ventilation systems, and using mold-resistant materials to reduce the risk of mold and mildew. We want your bathroom renovation to last a lifetime – and use both tried and true techniques and new technology to minimize the potential for harmful mold growth.

    4. How Long Will My Bathroom Renovation Take?

Bathrooms tend to be relatively small rooms – but that doesn’t mean that a renovation will take a short time. Typically, a bathroom renovation will take a month or less. Some may even take under 2 weeks to complete. However, if you have a particularly large renovation planned – particularly one that involves more extensive construction – then it may take longer than a month.

As part of the planning process, our team will let you know what to expect when it comes to the renovation timeline. We will also inform you of any delays, such as any issues with materials being back-ordered.
